CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
This class is broken into two parts: the knowledge portion and the skills portion. The knowledge portion is taught between January 18 and March 1, and the skills portion is taught on March 5 and 12. All of the in-person sessions will be held at Sunnyvale Fire Station 2, 795 East Arques Avenue, Sunnyvale.
KNOWLEDGE PORTIONThe knowledge portion covers important information in the CERT Basic curriculum, including:
The knowledge portion is provided through an online learning management system, which means you can study it at your convenience. It will take approximately 14 hours. During this portion of the class, there are three required in-person meetings at Fire Station 2:
In addition, instructors will be available via Zoom at 7:00pm on Tuesdays, January 25, and February 1, 15, and 22, to answer any questions you may have as you proceed through the online learning. These sessions are optional. Questions can also be asked via email at any time.
SKILLS PORTIONThose who complete the online knowledge portion of the class, and pass the knowledge check on March 1, can proceed to the skills portion of the class, teaching the techniques for the CERT Basic curriculum, including:
The skills portion of the class is taught on two successive full Saturdays, March 5 and 12, from 9:00am—4:00pm at Fire Station 2.
NOTESOn successful completion of the class, you will be invited to join the Sunnyvale CERT deployment team, which supports the professional responders in Sunnyvale's Department of Public Safety. The CERT deployment team has monthly advanced training and drills, and gets called out for disasters, emergencies, and public service events. Joining the CERT deployment team is optional, but it's a great way to support the community and maintain your disaster response skills.
IMPORTANT: Space in this class is limited. Please do not sign up unless you fully expect to complete the entire online learning course and attend all of the in-person sessions. This class is open to anyone over the age of 18, but preference will be given to Sunnyvale residents.
COVID-19: This class will conform to the COVID-19 regulations in force at the time it meets. In the unlikely event that COVID-19 regulations are tightened, we may be forced to modify or cancel the class.
