Fish of the Peninsula and the South Bay Watersheds

Friday, March 5, 2021 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (PST)

Description

Do you love hearing about local South Bay wildlife, including residents of the Stevens Creek Trail? We have an event coming up for you!

In partnership with POST (Peninsula Open Space Trust), we invite you to attend an educational webinar “Fish of the Peninsula and the South Bay Watersheds” on March 5th from 12:00pm-1:00pm.

This discussion with ecologist Richard Tejeda, Founder of Saved By Nature, will cover local fish that can be found along Stevens Creek Trail including the threatened California coastal steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). We are excited to be co-hosting this event with POST. An important part of our mission is to enhance the wildlife corridors in the Stevens and Permanente Creek Watersheds.

In 2016, we partnered with local governments and other groups to sponsor the Stevens Creek Steelhead Passage Improvement Project. The Feasibility Report was completed in 2017. We selected one barrier in Deep Cliff Golf Course in Cupertino as the first project to tackle. In 2018, we secured financial commitments from the four cities along the creek—Cupertino, Los Altos, Sunnyvale and Mountain View—along with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and the golf course and applied for a matching grant from Valley Water. The grant was awarded in 2019, and in 2020 we began the design process. If the situation permits, we hope to begin construction in late summer 2021. You can learn more about our Fish Passage Project on our website

The Central California coast steelhead are one of 12 NOAA-Fisheries designated Distinct Population Segments and are listed as a threatened species. Steelhead trout are a unique “anadromous” (part ocean-living, part freshwater) species that can be found along the creek though at present are quite rare. It is the same species as rainbow trout, differing only in their ocean-going habits. You can read more about trout life-cycles on signage along the Stevens Creek Trail in Mountain View.
